17th ITSF Ceremony

23 February 2011

In Japan, February is still filled by the snow and chilly wind. In Indonesia, and some other warmer countries, rain is also continuously dominating in February. A weather condition that often refrain people from doing many activities in their daily life, but indeed, it never happened in Toray Indonesia.

For Indonesia Toray Science Foundation (ITSF), February is the busiest month of the year. It is when they hold an Awarding Ceremony for all the winners of ITSF Porgrams. The last and most imposrtant event during the ITSF cycle, when the best science teachers, and science researchers are awarded, and more over acknowledged as "chosen people" who contributing to the advancement of science and technology in Indonesia.

This year, the ITSF Ceremony was held on February 10, in Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta, and was specially attended by Mr. Yukihiro Sugimoto, the Executive Vice President of Toray Industries, Inc., Japan, represented Dr Katsunosuke Maeda, and also His Excellency Mr. Kojiro Shiojiri, the Japan Ambassador for Indonesia. As the representatives from Indonesian government, there were Prof. Djoko Santoso, representing the Minister of National Education and Prod. Freddy Permana Zen, representing the Minister of Research and Technology.

The 2010 Science and Technology Award was granted to Dr. Suryadi Ismadji, from Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya, with his research entitled "High Surface Activated Carbon from Agricultural Waste Materials as Adsorbents and Energy Storage". The other awards, the Science and Technology Education Research Grant was given to 9 winners, while the Science and Technolohy Grant was went to 15 recipients.

As stated clearly in Mr. Sugimoto's speech, ITSF as one of CSR activities within the Toray Group Indonesia should be continuously sustained in order to support the advancement of science and technology in Indonesia, while also nurturing and increasing the friendship and solidarity between Indonesia and Japan in the future.
